San Quirico d’Orcia and the Festa del Barbarossa – June 12th-16th

San Quirico d’Orcia, a magnificent town located in Val d’Orcia in Tuscany, along the ancient Via Francigena, will soon bewitch again lovers of the Middle Ages with the 62nd edition of the Festa del Barbarossa (Festival of Barbarossa, with “Barbarossa” – meaning “Red-bearded” – being the nickname of Emperor Frederick I Hohenstaufen), scheduled for June 12-16. As usual, the small Tuscan town will reenact a historical episode in which Frederick Barbarossa was involved.

The places where the reenactments will be held will be the Horti Leonini and other buildings in the historic center. Leading the way during the days of the event will be the good cuisine of the local tradition, offered in the charming taverns of the center.

The program of the Festa del Barbarossa, in fact, revolves around the emperor’s descent to Rome and his stop in San Quirico d’Orcia. The places where the reenactments will be held will be the Horti Leonini and other buildings in the historic center. On Sunday, June 16th, at 4 p.m. on the parvis of the Collegiate Church, the reenactment of the historic meeting between Frederick I Hohenstaufen (Barbarossa) and the messengers of Pope Adrian IV in the year 1155. A detailed program can be found on the event website.

The Festa del Barbarossa is organized by the Municipality of San Quirico d’Orcia in collaboration with the many volunteers of this gorgeous Val d’Orcia hamlet located less than 10 kilometres away from the vineyards where the legendary Brunello di Montalcino red wine originates.
